Checked out a Hurricane Sun Deck this weekend

As with my last experience checking out boats at a boat show late winter, I was suprised about the quality of the boat. I wasn't able to inspect a Hurricane at the boat show, but I was a little suprised how low quality things now appear to be. My 2000 Maxum Cuddy seems to be built with much sturdier componets than some new boats.

I looked at the Hurricane 187 SunDeck boat w/ a 4.3L carb.

Likes:
1) Great Layout
2) Extended swim platform
3) Lots of room for the size
4) Higher capacity plate 10 people/ ~1430lbs (compared to my 8 people/ 1200lbs for people+ gear 19ft Maxum)
5) Nice large ski locker
6) Large storage compartments under both consoles that includes a cooler for storage

Dislikes:
1) No sunbrella covers/bimini, only cheap material
2) Windsheild seemed flimbsy w/ a stamped hindge, never seen a hindge like this before
3) Very thin cleats
4) Cheap latches, every storage compartment seemed to use an exteremly cheap plastic latch that I couldn't see lasting more than a year or two w/ normal use.
5) Storage shelf under helm appeared to be made out of cheap disposable plastic cups that were recycled from your favorite drive through burger joint. (It was very flimsy)
6) While there were lots of storage areas under seats, there was very little to no area to store something w/o having to ask someone to move. I like to have some things easily accessible, i.e. dock lines, grapple/oar.
7) Not enough cupholders, I think I only saw two in the cockpit
8) Cushions seemed very hard, though they might soften up in heat and w/ use.
9) Not enough usable storage near/around helm. I don't recall seeing a cup holder near the helm either.

Even with all my complaints, most of them could be solved by not much money replacing the latches, adding cup holders, and replacing covers and bimin when needed w/ sunbrella. With that in mind my biggest concern would be cheap plastic shelf under the helm. According to the dealer the stringer are wood core, wrapped in fiberglass w/ holes drilled and PVC pipe placed through them and the pvc was also protected by fiberglass. They also say they get very few Hurrcianes back for used resell. In addition to that I seen no used Hurricanes on the market in my area. I am going to stick w/ my boat for now, though I might keep an eye out for one of these to see how they hold up in a few years, when I need the extra room.

Hurricanes are great boats. A buddy had had his for 7yrs with zero problems.

Just like cars, most boat companies offer tons of options. The one you saw at the show was probably a "less" upgraded one. If you go to their site they have options galore. Stainless steel cup holders, heavier vinyl, and lights galore. It pretty much all depends on how much you want to spend.

As a former owner of a Hurricane that I sold earlier this year by need not by choice I disagree with most points you made about the lack of quality of the boat.

I owned mine for 6 years and had zero problems that I did not create myself by my own stupidity or ignorance.

They hold their resale value very well and there are tons of older ones out there which shows that they last a long time if taken care of.

If I was in the market for a Deck boat in the future I would not hesitate for a second to invest in a Hurricane.

I believe like the poster above mentioned, that you probably saw a bare bones model lacking any upgrades and such.

I am not questioning or reviewing the quality of the boat you purchased 6+ years ago, IMHO pretty much all manufactures seem to be cutting corners. I wanted to check out their new boat as I can't find one used to look at. This review only speaks for the 2012 model, I can't comment on the quality or build of older model, though I have heard nothing bad. Please don't take my review as a personal attack, which it is not, only an honest opinion on someone who looked at many boats, both new and used. The older ones seem more solid.

Also, I wasn't at a boat show, I went to one late winter and didn't see a Hurricane there, so I checked out the dealer. Also this model wasn't a base model. It had the extended swim platform, which is an option, that I wouldn't go w/o.

It also had the following options:
Snap in Carpet
Extended Swim Platform
Live Well
Boat Cover
Bimini

One last thing many of the complaints are not to do w/ lacking features, but things that wouldn't be option. They wouldn't give you an upgrade for the following:
1) Cheap plastic shelf under helm
2) Lack of cup holders, I could care less if the are SS, 4-5 is not enough. My cuddy has 5. The BR version has 7.
3) No Sunbrella upgrade option
4) They won't have a windshield upgrade. Also I checked out a 23-24' and it had the same quality windshield.

Feel free to go to a dealer and check out a boat and let me know if they still build them like they use to.

You're going to find most manufacturers have made cost cutting moves as a result of the recession.

Hurricane is a Nautic brand; they generally make mid-range boats (Rinker, Polarcraft). They (Hurricane) also have a wide range of models, so you're not going to see the best of materials on every single boat, since they have to bring models to market at a variety of price points. The 187 you viewed is the smallest and lowest priced SunDeck Hurricane offers.

Coincidentally, I was watching a video walk-through of a Hurricane 2400 OB Sundeck shortly before I viewed this thread... The thing must have had 12 cupholders at least, including TWO at the helm (double fisting?). I stopped counting. ;)
