I am interested in buying a boat engine on eBay. Price is right, seller has no negative feedback, and I will be paying by PayPal which gives me some recourse.

Is there an online database of stolen engines that I can check? Is there anything else that I can do to determine if the engine is stolen before buying it?

I have the serial number of the engine,G04431313, and the engine is a 1998 Evinrude 100 hp.

Thanks.

Richard

Not to my knowledge.

Just having the serial number is a good sign that it is legit.

in florida it is not possble to title or register outboards, so serial would be pointless here

Unfortunately, it's generally true that OB's are not registered and titled. With the price of the big ones being what they are, seems like it's time to start.

gr8rg8r,

I have purchased 2 outboards on Ebay with success.
Just make sure you know what your getting(read the description carefully). If the seller has good feedback and many feedbacks it should be ok.If the seller has NO negative feedback I would not worry too much.Good luck.

gr8rg8r..........

Go to your local law enforcement agency, with the serial number and ask to have them run a "stolen" check on the motor. They should be able to conduct at least two checks, to determine if it is stolen.

One check is thru, "N.C.I.C." the National Crime Information Center." The second would be thru "APS", "Automated Property System." Being an outboard motor is gas powered and has a serial number, a third check might be made. This would be "S.V.S." The "Stolen Vehicle System", which is usually only an in state check. NCIC and APS are nation wide systems and can include some parts of Canada.

One other thing, the serial number could come up "clear", even if it is a stolen motor, if it was never reported to a law enforcement agency, without giving the serial number and description of the engine, it will not qualify for entry into NCIC or APS.

Not everybody records their serial numbers, so a theft victim could try to report it missing locally, but it would probably written up as an information report, using only it's physical description, rather than a normal stolen property report, with "hard" identification, the serial number.

...Bob in Calif...
