If everything is setup correctly, (transom height, prop size & pitch, trim, weight distribution etc) you should see near max RPM at WOT. I have 15' Diablo https://www.google.com/search?q=bol...3BcWhkQfH94CACA&ved=0CC4QsAQ&biw=1280&bih=678 with a Tohatsu 20 HP 4 stroke and I get +/- 5800 RPM and around 22 MPH on calm water with two people plus gear on board.

YMMV

Well I ordered a tach when it come's we'll know for sure if the RPM's are correct. 20 mph seems like a lot?? I hope it will do that.

Pobably not 20 MPH with a 9.8 HP, theoretically much less, will depend on boaters weight, hull size, hull drag coefficient, testing combo on flat glassy, no wind waters. Max rpm along + more HP matters to achieve more speed compared to same max rpm achieved with a lower HP engine.

You can use the Factory tachometer (aftermarket units may not read properly) to determine your WOT RPM, and at what RPMs different conditions (such as planing) occur. Then you can see the effect on that RPM when you change rigging parameters, such as prop pitch. On the MFS9.8A3, you will want to get as close to 6000 RPM (without going over) as possible at WOT.

I would also recommend a good speedometer (perhaps a GPS) for checking boat speeds, so you can measure the effects of different trim and jacking adjustments. Remember that GPS speed does not show speed through the water, but speed "over the bottom", so currents affect that reading. Wind and waves will affect both GPS and through-water speeds.
