The check engine alarm on my 1996 225 Johnson goes off when I try to accelerate past 4000 rpms. Engine appears to run fine and alarm does not go off at slower speeds, also alarm does not go off when revving the engine past 4000 in neutral. I checked all the obvious fuel line fittings/connections. Engine seemed to burn a lot more fuel when running at the slower speed, about 1.2 mpg/15 gph according to the fuel meter.Wondering if it could be a gasket leak on the VRO pump? Looking for some expert advice on where to direct my attention

The check engine alarm is for fuel restriction. Check all hoses, fittings from sensor on left side of engine and anti-siphon valve. You can connect a vacumn gauge to the same port as the sensor, if about 4 inches vac, the sensor may be bad, if over 6/7 inches, fuel restriction.

HEY 25, YOUR GETTING AIR IN FROM SOMEWHERE. I WOULD CHECK THE FUEL FILTER ON THE BACK OF THE MOTOR. SOMETIMES THE O-RING & GASKET ON THE FILTER DO NOT SIT RIGHT & IT STARTS SUCKING AIR INTO THE CARBS
