Re: Cheating pro fisherman

That's sad. Things like this are what turn a lot of people sour on organized sporting events. I have never understood how cheaters can live with themselves. Even if they get away with it they will always know they didn't out perform the others. The memory alone would be a curse that could never be worth the money or prize in my book. If caught look what the penalties are. Reputation shot. Friends lost. Possible legal troubles. Family and loved ones hurt (That would be the worst). I sure hope a lot of "would be cheaters" read this story and change their thinking.

I quickly scanned a couple articles, he's been fishing tournaments since 1996, won over $200,000, including a couple boats.

Just think if you were second place in one of the tournaments he won a boat or huge prize...:mad::mad:

Something tells me Karma is gonna come a knocking :D

Well, cheating in some forms happen a lot while flat out cheating like stuffing weights and stringered fish don't happen very often but it does happen. Not so much in big events but most often in small local money pot winner takes all type events. Most of us don't do it because we can't live with our guilty conscience and once a cheater, always a cheater. If one failed a lie detector test then he's banned for life. If one wins an event legally but cheated in the past, his legit win would be forfeited.

Years ago, I heard a statement,"anything that gets to popular, is ruined". "Professional fishing" is now in that catagory.
This won't stop anyone else from cheating, our jails are FULL of cheaters and they all think that they are to smart to get caught. There's hardly even a negative connotation to cheating in professional sports anymore. I have a HUGE problem with fishing being a "professional sport", the more money that is involved, the more effort that goes into cheating. I was involved in a small event a few years ago and was beaten out of first place, by a guy that I KNEW was cheating and he knew that I knew, the problem was that he had his small son with him and I couldn't bring myself to disgrace the cheat in front of his son. I hope he learned something and didn't just pass his cheating ways along to his son.

Maybe they'll have to start having X-Ray/metal detectors for the fish, just like at the airport, just to maintain honesty/integrity for the sport.

Don't think that would make much difference...we had an ahole at a local tourney who stuffed frogs down their throats to increase the weight...I couldn't look myself in the mirror knowing I had to resort to cheating to win...

More than half of the fun of fishing is the challenge- that's the satisfaction factor. I have never entered a serious competition other than the "gentleman's game" of who catches the most fish... but beating nature and the fish and coming in "only" second is extremely satisfying. To cheat on a weigh-in would take all that personal pride away.

Only shallow people cheat.

People will cheat as long as western thinking concentrates on the individual rather than the sport. Me-me-me is the norm and individual achevement is lauded instead of sportsmanship. Untill people realize that they are part of a whole and not THE entity, greed and selfishness will prevail. Thinking that second place is first loser is the wrong way to look at it.

We are all in this life and world together, and must learn that setting yourself appart makes you an outcast,; not a winner.

That sounds like the answer to the world's problems is in merely adopting a tribal point of view.

Doesn't individual morality hold any water in today's world(ala boyscouts, olympic sports, auto racing even)?

A purely eastern perspective in the US would seem be about as inappropriate as imposing Boston cultural norms on Aleutian natives.

Individual morality transcends mere cultural norms.

When I was a boy scout it was about being part of a group; a team. Race car drivers won't be much good without a large team behind them; but seem to be looked to as heros. I for one, don't want to lean on others to make myself look good or pretend to be more important than you. I am not one in 6 billion; I am one OF 6 billion.
Morality is altruistic; not individual. If you think only as an individual (as this guy obviously did) then you will do or say anything to promote, enhance and glorify yourself. It is only by concern for the efect of your actions on something else, be it humanity, group, family, society, environment, or another "individual" that morality even exists.

There is a lack of a sense of civic responsibility in so many today. Very sad.

It's all about the money.

When the number has enough zeros, things like "morality" and "ethics" get a little fuzzy, even for otherwise good, decent people. Not everybody, but a lot.

You know this guy had to have got away with it before. Ok, maybe he is a total idiot, but I think chances are, he wouldn't kill and load up every fish...he must have started on a smaller scale.

One of my favorite sayings. If you need to cheat to beat me then I have already won.

When I was a cub scout, I caught the troop leader's son tampering with the other boys' pinewood derby cars.

Cheating is nothing new, and cheaters can be found anywhere.
