OK Bond-O. Here I am. I'm curious. Is Chaumont upstate, or on Long Island? Possibly Lake George or Champlain?

When I lived in New York I cruised the Hudson from Peekskill to Thousand Islands, Canada twice. In a 15 footer. It was a trip well worth taking and I would recommend it to anyone who likes to cruise.

Waterskiied from Tappan Zee to West Point almost every weekend. That was back when the liberty ships were still anchored off Peekskill.

Back then there was no fee to use the canal system. A complete chart book with a separate smaller book listing marinas, restaurants and gas stops only cost 5 bucks from the recreation commission. Now, last I read, there is a 50 buck season fee to use the canals.

Re: Chaumont, New York

Hi Frank,....

Chaumont is a small village up here on the shores of Lake Ontario,....
Pretty much in the Northeast Corner of the Lake, is Chaumont Bay, Supposedly the Largest Freshwater Bay in the World,.....
Not sure I'm buying That,... But it IS Big......
If you look on a Map,.. You'll see NY.rte. 12E runs from Watertown to Cape Vincent, the Head of the St.Lawrence river,..... Chaumont is About 1/2 way in-between,.... My Waterfront Houses are about 100yd.s from the rte.12E bridge over the Chaumont river, where it meets the Bay....
1 of the Riverhouses I remodeled last winter,+ have it rented to a GI from Ft.Drum.... The other 1 is in the midst of a Major Rebuild,+ Lift-up out of the Riverbed......
Doing this All Myself, I'm Hoping for a 3/5 year timeline....

I'm actually living just outside of Watertown, up here in Jefferson County,...
We have Lake Ontario to our West,+ the St.Lawrence to our North.....
Way Up here in the Corner of the state.....
From the house here, I'm 12 miles to My Riverhouses in Chaumont,+ about 25 miles up to Clayton, if I want to Fish the St.Lawrence.....

Where are you Now calling Home,..?..?.
Somewhere down around Philly I'd Guess,.....

Yea! about 20 miles west of Philly--West Chester, Pa. So now I primarily cruise the Schulkill River, if you could call 1 1/2 miles a cruise, (Skool-Kill) Delaware River, and Chesapeak Bay.

I have a sister that lives outside Rochester but I get there only infrequently. But I remember going to Buffalo once and seeing Lake Erie. It's that small on the map but that day it had waves at least 5 feet in height. Impressed me! And I think Lake ontario isn't much smaller. You gotta have a set to boat on there unless it's a very good day.

I kinda thought you would be somewhere in the north part of the state because of the French name.

First trip up to Canada (1968) I stayed at a marina at the Isle St. Helene at the Worlds Fair. 15 cents a foot overnight fee. Second time up several years later (1972) It was an amusment park called La Rhonde. Right near the Eisenhower Locks if they're still called that.

If you ever get the time, travel St Lawrence downriver to Sorel and take the Richelieu River south. If it hasn't changed, there will be a series of locks probably 200 years old called the Chambly Canal that ends at St. Jean. They are all operated by hand--very picturesque. Locks are only 100 feet long, 20 feet wide, and 6 feet deep. All stone with wood gates. In between the locks were waterfront houses. Every other house had a seaplane parked there.. It was like the playground for rich Quebecans or Quebecois. Sombody will jump in and give the proper spelling.

I had photos of all of the locks and houses but as my kids got older they (photos, not kids-- I'm not that lucky.) mysteriously vanished. I had one gem, of a man sticking a pike into a bollard and walking circles around it to open a bridge. Gone now.

If anyone out there knows if the Chambly Canal is still the same, I'd like to know.

BTW if you can get to yahoo groups chrysler crew photo albums, You can see a few of my six boats. Frank's Boats. You'll have to fudge around for the exact address though, I don't remember it.
