2 questions. First, will a tachometer that was used on a 1990 merc 90 hp work for my 1986 evinrude 110? I have seen reference to charging tachs? Second, my battery is not charging and finally stranded me, thank you TowBoat U/S for the free ride. Where do I start with diagnosis for this?

Sounds like you lost the rectifier also. Seems to be a lot of that going around.

Good luck!

I have not figured out where my manual is yet, it is either in my shed or at my brother's house. Where is the rectifier located? What does it look like? And most important what will it cost?

There are three things to consider when buying real estate.....location..location..location!!!
There are three things to have when trouble-shooting electrical....manual..manual..manual.(good digital voltmeter don't hurt either..LoL) If I was a bettin' man, I'd bet on Dhadley. If the cost was comin out of my pocket, I trouble-shoot it to the end.(then replace the rec./reg. assmy...LoL) The manual will tell you location and test procedures. As for price, any amount is too much if you replace the wrong part. Find your manual and get used to navigating through it.....its your best friend!!

The Clymer manual should have an electric schematic for that motor -- They're in the appendices at the back. Try your local library. Get a multimeter -- A $20 model will do you.

Teleflex has a website with extensive tach troubleshooting info including PDF files with all kinds of info.

If it's the rectifier -- you can sometimes get them used from a dealer -- I did.

You can damage the rectifier with the wrong tach set up -- did you already try to hook up that merc tach by any chance?

Yes I did try to hook up the tach. I guess the saying should be error by trial. I also tried using 2 batteries that were about shot hooked up through a perko switch without alt. disconnect. It seems this may have been a problem too. I also discovered the negative ground bolt for everything loose on the block. I did manage to catch a nice croaker before the battery problems on Saturday, it made a nice lunch today. thanks for all the help thus far. I still need to find out about the tach compatability.
