Charging System

I thought I had my charging system fixed. My battery was charging at 13.5 or so WOT before I decided to charge the battery up. So I left everything hooked up and put the charger on it. Next thing I know my battery is at 13.0 volts, but the outboard would produce upto 15.5 WOT. Then all of a sudden after a good 4 or 5 hours of use, it went right back to only putting out 13.5 or so. I don't understand.

Any ideas? I'm going to try charging the battery, but it's at 12.6 volts, so I can't imagine that is the problem. The recitfier is brand new, and I get 18-20 volts, at least, off the lighting coil (AC volts). And the battery is a starting battery, brand new as well, with only the radio hooked up to it. And we didn't even play the radio all that much.

Re: Charging System

I think your system is working properly, High Tide. Normal charging voltage should be 13.5 to 14 volts and a fully charged battery with no load on it should read 12.6 volts. Changes in the load in normal operation will cause temporary readings higher or lower by a volt or two, but are not sysmptoms of failure. Is something else happening that you didn't mention?

Standing by.
JB
