Charging system issues Merc........

96 5.7 GM Acts as if the belt is loose, it's not. The gage indicates charging at idle speed or just above. Drops to discharge as rpm increase. Am replacing the six year old battery today. The question is will a bad battery effect the charging system as described or do I need to dig further??? Seems to me the charging system should function correctly regardless of the condition of the battery, am I off on this???

question, have you checked the battery with a load on it? I'm with you, either the alternator is working or it isn't.
