Started up my boat the other day for the first time since the spring, it started fine, ran up and down the river just fine. Started it up two more time the next two days. Well then Sunday when i went to start it, it wouldn't turn over, so i switched batteries and it fired right up, so i'm worried that my charging system is bad.

I got a voltmeter out and tested it and it was running around 6v, but shouldn't it be up around 13v?

I tested the output at the cables that attach to the battery, with them disconnected to the battery, so maybe that's why it's only 6v. When they are attached to the battery, there wasn't any noticeable increase in voltage, like there is on a car/truck. Is that because it's a very nominal voltage return to the battery to keep it charged?

Thanks for the help!

To check your stator, disconnect yellow lead and yellow/gray lead at the terminal block. Connect the red meter lead to either yellow lead and meter black lead to ground to check for shorts. An infinite reading on HI ohms scale indicates the windings are good. Connect ohmmeter to LO ohms scale between the yellow and yellow /gray leads. A reading of .25 ohms + or - .1 indicates the windings are good, and an infinite or very high reading indicates the windings are open.
