Charging system 2004 8HP honda for kicker

I just picked up a used 2004 8HP honda to use for a trolling motor. Just for kicks when i had the motor running I connected a multimeter to the connector of the motor to see if there was good voltage and it read 0VDC. Am I getting this reading because the leads are not connected to a battery thus the "circuit" is not complete?

On my 84 there's an inline fuse.
Not sure if yours has one.

Honda has a system that senses voltage or load before sending power to the battery, this prevents the rectifier from frying when no battery is used. It's a nice feature. I can't say for sure if your motor has that system though. So you need to connect a battery before you'll see a reading.
