CHARGING QUESTION

I have just acquired a 1989 90HP 3 cylinder outboard with a CDI stator in it. Started the motor up and it was not charging. Replaced the rectifier with a CDI unit and now the voltage goes off the gauge 30 seconds after it,s started.so my question is is that normal to have 16-17 volts at 1200 RPM. thanks.

That voltage is too high. Check the connections to the battery, as the battery functions as a voltage regulator, via it's load on the circuit.

the battery is new and the connections are clean.do you think i got a bad new rectifier?

Possible

Could be an issue with the stator. You'll need to follow the testing protocol using an ohm meter and peak voltage adapter. CDI makes a shunt compatible with most standard dvms for peak voltage testing

The rectifier module may not contain a regulator. Without a regulator, 16V is a common output at higher RPMs. With a regulator it will stop at 14.5V.

I haven't checked on this, but a red stator is used with a 16 amp regulator on regulated power sources (like my 2002 90 and 115 have) whereby a 9 amp. black stator is used on unregulated sources reducing the opportunity for overcharging the battery and usually used on lower HP engines. You can look up under the flywheel and see the color of the stator.

it is a CDI stator so there is no color. I,m going to get a mercury rectifier first and see what happens. thanks.

My 1987/88? 90hp has always put out high voltage. 20 volt AC to the input side of the rectifier and 15-16 VDC on the output side. This was typical of my original 9 amp stater and my red 9 amp replacement in 2001. I do not have a regulator. Has never caused me any problems and I'm still on my 3rd battery and 2nd rectifier since the motor was new. Motor has 1475 hrs.

Well a new quality regulator solved the problem. It stays at 13 volts at idle and 15-16 volts at 5400 rpm.
