Working on a 73 Johnson 115. She has been starting (After a bit of coercion for the first start of the day) and turning off fine. The other day I started the morning by wiring the killswitch in line to the M wire. After running her for a bit I determined she was not charging the battery. Further, the tach has not worked and from what I remember on initial hookup it acted sporatically.
All signs would point to the rectifier. I pulled it and tried testing with an ohmmeter and got fairly inconsistent results. I'm hoping this indicates that this is where the problem lies. I picked up a new one yesterday and plan on putting it on today.
However, I put the old rectifier back on and started her up. Still not charging, but I also could not key off the motor. I tried pulling the safety switch, still running. I eventually had to choke the engine out to get her to quit.
What gives? Is it possible I created some sort of voltage short on the rectifier while taking it off and that is causing the new problem?
As I said I'm going to replace the rectifier today and see if I'm getting AC voltage from the stator. At this point it's mid June and if I don't fix it in the next two days she's going into the shop. Any help you can offer would be greately appreciated.
