Charge indicator circuit

While swapping everything from my 75 horse onto my new 85 horse, I was looking at the wiring and got wondering. What is that purple charge indicator wire supposed to hook to? It comes off one of the A/C poles on the regulator and runs under the dash where it just hangs. Can I hook up an idiot light to it or something?

Also, my tach wire comes off of the ignition box (white) and connects to one of the two leads on my tach. The other is grounded. Sound about right?

Your tach wiring sounds correct. I too am curious about the purple wire. I hope one of the wizards can help.

I looked at a few different diagrams for the 85 hp. Give me the year and I can tell you. It looks to hook up to the terminal block under the dash and stop there. Another diagram shows one connecting to the ignition switch to power all the accessories while the engine is running or it could be an overheat buzzer.

Thats what I found too on the diagram. It can't hook to ignition or power accessories since its off the A/C side of the regualtor. Appears it just hangs under the dash for some reason. I guess I could hook it to the 12 volt side of the regulator and hook that up to a volt gauge to get some idea of whats going on........ Just thought it has to be there for a reason!

Guys, in my old GLENNS repair manual that purple wire is for a charging indicator lamp. I don't have one currently and I was going to use a green LED for the charging indicator lamp and wire her in. Of course mine is an old 1969 motor but I wouldn't think the wiring would have changed much over the years.

Thats what it says online too, charge indicator circuit. I'm not sure what can be done with it though if it comes off the A/C stud on the regulator. You can't run that through anything..........
