I am new to boating and have been researching boats on-line for the past month or so but just can't seem to decide on one particular boat. I have decided to go with a cuddy but not sure which one. I have it narrowed down to two boats. A 2003 (new) Chaparral 215SS or a 2004 Bayliner 212. Both are very similar in every aspect but the price. The Chaparral is about $9000 more expensive. Now I know that by price alone, I should go with the Bayliner but I am planning on keeping the boat for many years so I want one that will last. Any suggestions or information is much appreciated!

Both will last the same lifetime. The Bayliner just won't look as good with age, nor will it sell for quite as much. Really depends on circumstances, how much of a stretch the extra $9k would be. Me? I would go shopping for a used Chap for even less $$ than the new Bayliner.

Kelly Cook

I don't know alot but I'm with them. I'd rather have a 2-5 year old chap before i had a brand new bayliner.

With some knowlege (available on these forums) on how to properly care for a boat, any name brand can be made to last for years. If you want one to leave outside, uncovered for months on end, well that's a different story and will drastically reduce the life of ANY boat.

If you would choose to go used, Make sure you have a thorough understanding of what you need to inspect before buying.

I'm very happy w/ my '96 Sunesta...has held up extremely well. I've heard almost nothing bad (quality-wise) from Chaparral and I know several owners. If I was going to buy a new boat, Chaparral would definitely be my first choice.

Go chaparrel... Just bought new 21'. Checked all boats out looking at four winns, crown line, sea ray, cobalt and the chaparrel tops it. They dot their i's and cross their t's. Quality, I wouldn't ever buy a bayliner and didn't even brouse at one looking for a boat 4 months, however bayliner, maxum, and sea ray all owned and manufactured by same company, bayliner bottom and sea ray top of line, they hit all three markets. GOOD LUCK
