Changing water impeller in 2008 merc optimax 150..Need help Please.

So I got myself in a bit of a bind. Watched youtube video on how to change impeller. When I took all bolts off to pull off my lower unit and access waterpump, realized that there is a black wire that runs from motor to lower unit. That wire wont allow me to lower the unit enough to get the shaft out of the motor housing. Can anyone tell me what that wire is and where I disconnect it so I can drop the lower unit. Also having hard time getting lower unit to go back into place. Wont slide up the last inch. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch.

That is your speedo tube. Look at lower motor monts and you will see a small coupler that holds the hose together,press in the sleeve around tube and it will release and pull out. It is like a mini sharkbite used in plumbing.....

That doesn't run my Tachometer as well does it?? I really dont care about my speed. Its not accurate anyway. Is it gonna hurt to cut it if I cant get it unhooked. Where it goes into the motor is very tight. I was unable to follow it to where it goes. Certanly didnt see anywhere that I could uncouple and pull it apart. Thankyou for your insight. I'll look at it in the morning when I get home.

Is there anyone else out there that can help me with these issues?? I really dont wanna mess up my motor. I know I should of maybe taken it to a dealer. Problem is there isnt one around my neck of the woods. Thanks for any input .

As noted above, it's your speedo tube. There should be a connection you can reach, but if not, just cut it some place where you can easily splice it back when you reinstall the lower unit, or you could just pinch it off with a zip tie if you don't care about the speedometer working. Your tachometer will not be affected.

The wire goes up into motor and then out the engine in to the hull. It is in the bundle of wires in front of the motor covered with a blank case with a zipper.

there is slack inside the hull. cut the zip ties around the bundle and you should have enough to remove the lower unit.
