I have a friend that had the trim/tilt motor on his 100 hp 1986 Evinrude go bad. A mechanic (not a marine mechanic) told him that the engine would have to be removed from the boat in order to change this trim motor. Is there any way to change it without removing the engine from the boat?

Thanks!

Re: Changing Trim/tilt motor on 1986 Evinrude

Just changed one on my 88 Johnson 110. Once the bolts are out and the FRIGGIN tilt cylinder pin is removed the whole trim unit should tilt out from the top first and then slide out of the transom bracket giving access to the third tilt motor screw. I found it easier to mount the assembly in a vise (gently) to replace and test the new unit. Also to drill and tap a broken mounting screw:mad:. Use lots of heat and penetrating lube on the screws.
Hope this helps.

However he may need to remove the port stern bracket, slide it to the left, and remove the steering to be able to squeeze the unit out through the brackets. No need to remove the motor though.
