I have been using AMSOIL in my cars for years with no complaints and Pennzoil synthetic blend in my 92 Evenrude 45hp and would like to switch to AMSOIL hp injector oil,(which can also be used as 50 to 1 mix). My question is, has anyone used this oil and if so what is your opinion? I know there has been alot of discussion on this subject, but it is such a critical factor that I want to get all the information I can on the matter. All input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sirbenbear,

Type 'Amsoil' or 'synthetic oil' in the i-boats search feature (red button at top of this page). Search in outboard sections, you will find all the pros and cons you will ever want to see. You can also look at the oil FAQ at the top of the forum list.

Trust me, its the safest way to get the information you are seeking - and welcome to i-boats!

Aldo

Im using the Hp Injector in my 1987 Merc 150 which has the injection still hooked up, runs smoother and smokes conciderably less than the Quicksilver that was in it when I got it, Never tried anything else in it, but Im 100% Happy with the performance.

sirbenbear
I don't see any problem trying whatever oil you want to try in an old motor that has no warrantee attached. What you want to use is not certified for outboard use by NMMA, but there are others here that use the same and continue to use it so at least in the short run it is adaquate. You want to make sure your thermostats are installed and working properly, cause it may not burn properly at low temps. That is the problem I had using full synth oil, tho not the same oil you are going to use. One of the motors I had didn't have thermo's, and the other had defective thermo,s so that was not a valid test. I say go for it and report back and give us some unbiased reports on what you find. just a thought :)

I am using Amsoil HP in my Froce 75-HP and runs smoother - less smoke - and keeps my plugs cleaner

I am happy with this product. Before I was using Quicksilver = smoke and plugs fouled

Smokey

Ive been using the Amsoil Products for near 25+ years, and have absolutly no problems with any of there products.

It is true that there outboard oils are not NMMA certified, and that bugs the heck out of me, also the 100:1 thing is so much of a turn off,(Even though it is a fine oil and I have used it also for years with great results), I would think it would be better to just repackage the HP injector oil into a 50:1 bottle, and have it certified. The Products exceed the TC-W3 Certification, But without the label, That statement means nothing.

You might want to clarify if you've been using their outboard oil for 25 years...and that one of the outboards that you did use it in died from oil problems within a year...just a thought :)

The Quicksilver (Mercury Marine) is an excellent oil designed for your Mercury.

Researching some of your older posts, it appears you de-carbed this outboard prior to using the Amsoil. The de-carb would be the primary reason that the engine now runs smoother and smokes less. You would find similar results using many other similar oils.

My input is this...don't change from a certified nmma oil to a non certified oil...unless it is branded by the specific motor mfg for that motor.

Ok, Now Im sure i know who you are.

If you would have "REALLY" looked at the previous posts, (which you never really do look closely, you would have seen that I did The decarbing before I switched to the synthetic, way before I actually switched, so I knew how it was performing with the Quicksilver. You actually think Im not sharper than that??? And Quicksilver isnt a bad oil, it is in fact a great oil as far as the regular oils go, and you really wont have any real problems using it, you can simply do better. Its also rated for air and water cooled, which I dont like in a regular oil. Im not concerned with a synthetic though. (IMHO)

What you say "COULD HAVE BE TRUE", But it isnt.

Isnt it amazing how far some will go to discredit someone???

Researching past posts, Not actually posting facts, changing your user name, Showing your true colors huh???

This post is also "NOT TRUE".

Yes, I have been using the 100:1 oil in every 2 cycle engine I have owned for over 25 years. A Homlite chain saw which I still have and runs like new.

I did run an early 70s 85 HP Evenrude on a 15' Ranger Bass Boat for two years at WOT using the Amsoil 100:1 oil at 80:1 running WOT everywhere I went fishing Bass tounaments. This particular engine had a gazzilion hours on it when I got it, and never missed a beat, After I sold it, this engine had to have been tired. The next owner used a regular dino oil, and it blew up, actually Grenaded within 6 months. I have to believe it was just worn out. OIL RELATED, I SERIOUSLY DOUBT IT. This engine probably had over 1,000 hrs at WOT by then. Who knows, it may not have happened if he would have kept using the Amsoil, We will never know. I think I bought time using it though. (MHO)

Boy, it just never stops.

Ok,
Sure, as long as they were a full synthetic!

I continue to feel (IMHO) that Amsoil puts more time into R&D than others to make the best oil possable, but Im not nieve enough to say the other synthetics are not good. Ive also continued to say that your engine will probably outlive you, your grand kids, and there kids with a regular TC-W3 oil. You will just get better performance all the way around using a full synthetic.

My main intent here is to have people use a full synthetic of whatever brand, I feel they are just better, and I feel in all aplications. (Which is the statement that gets me in the deepest trouble). I say that because I have yet to see an engine that has not benifitted from synthetics.

Re: Changing to full synthetic oil (Yes or No)

I posted this in the other thread regarding oil and felt it was worth repeating here.

Lubedude before making accusatory posts to new members, please email us mods with your suspicions and we will check out IP addresses.

TheOilDoc, we have had many ongoing sessions regarding oil and the issue seems to send everyone into a tailspin. Not knowing the history, you couldn't have realized that you stepped into some sensitive territory.

We appreciate all the knowledge our members have to offer from both sides however, we prefer to leave the oil wars to our country's leaders.
