I have a Lund 1800 1999 Fisherman boat, I would like to change my two batteries that are running a 12V Trolling Motor and some accessories to 24V, I know how to connect batteries to do this but what do I do with the accessories that are now connected to it? I have a third battery that runs the starter and other accessories that is located in back of boat and don't want to ad to this battery. My question is do I need to ad a separate charging system that is 24V for the two batteries that I convert to 24V, also and should I also ad a fourth battery to run the extra accessories? thanks for any help?

Re: Changing to 24V system

You can run 12V accessories off the 24V bank, just run them off a single battery, so they only receive 12V. Be sure to run them off the "bottom" battery in the 24V bank (the battery that provides 0-12V, not the one that provides 13-24V) for safety.

If the accessories draw a LOT of power, you may want to add another battery for the accessories.

You don't need a 24V charger, but a 12V multi-bank charger with "independent outputs" is recommended for the ease of charging. I'd use a 3 bank charger since you have 3 batteries.

You do realize you cannot charge that 24 volt system from the engine charging system? You cannot use an isolator or ACR on the system as there are ground issues related to the jumper between the two batteries. You need to charge the 24 volt system with a two bank on-board charger when you get back to the dock.

Re: Changing to 24V system

Here is how you wire two batteries in a 24 volt configuration, and how to get 12 volts from that system for accessories. Just wire each pair of outputs from your three bank charger to each individual battery and y0u will be fine. WARNING: mark each output pair BAT 1, BAT 2 and BAT 3 and ALWAYS keep the NEGATIVE matched up with POSITIVE for each output. Failure to do so can cause a serious headache for you.
