Can anyone advise on changing the timing belt on this 2009 150 HP Yamaha 4 stroke motor and should it be done by a OEM mechanic or can it be a DIY type project. thanks, ! Also, how often should it be inspected and or changed.

Car timing belts last for thousands of hours with NO inspections or adjustments Each manufacturer has their own standards to follow.

Very few car engines run at constant 5000 / 6000 RPM.-----And there is a need to know whether it is clearance engines or not ?

I am sure your service manual for that motor would help you understand what to do and how to do it.
You might even find help on U tube
the owner's manual might even tell you how often to do things

thanks for reply, (and thank you for your service sir, honor speaking with you) !!! I have watched multiple vids on You-tube on this subject, guess I was hoping for input from others who have done this or tried to do it,, so maybe I would not make the same mistakes, etc... always helps to ask first, comments from a reputable boat seller here in NC, advised they don't like to work on anything this old, (2009 GEEEEZ), !!!! It has come to a realization in this area, if you own a boat, you are on your own with repair unless your pockets are very very deep. !!

Changing the belt should not be different between a 2009 and a recent model.-----Same belt and sprockets are used on a 2024 model I believe.------Sad that some shops are only interested in writing up $20,000 invoices for new motors.----Perhaps contact Yamaha and find an actual proper factory service dealer !!
