Changing tilt gear seals

I need to replace the seals on my 85 OMC tilt motogear case. The Clymer manual I have directs me to pull the stern drive, remove the tilt motor and remove the hammer-blow coupling from the end of the worm shaft. It appears almost impossible to remove the tilt motor. Can the seals be replaced without remove the motor? Any intuitive suggestions?

Re: Changing tilt gear seals

Is the tilt gearbox leaking oil? If not, just change it every year. They all leak water. It is the nature of the beast. The weight of the drive on the tilt shaft pulls the shaft off center and allows water in. I drilled the bottom of my tilt box and tapped it with a 1/8" pipe tap. Just be sure not to run the tap too far in and use a stainless steel pipe plug. Also you want to be sure that your tilt box cover is double gasketed. With the drain plug, you'll never have to pull the cover again.
