Changing the skeg drive shaft, johnson 50 1996

Hey,

I have a Johnson 50hp full eletric which the skegs seals popped and bolloxed it, so got a replacement evinrude one, now its identical apart from the drive shaft up to the engine, its the same diamater at the lower end but up top it is a smaller diamater and also fewer splines, now is there a bit up top I can change to accomadate this? or how hard is it to swap shafts?
