I am trying to reload windows 2k on my daddy's machine. It has a 40 gb hardrive and I want to divide it in half. I am in setup and at the screen that allows me to create a partition size. Currently it is showing the whole harddrive size with a white highlited number.

The instructions are "to create the new partition, enter a size below and press enter". It then states the min and max size allowed, and gives the statement "Create partition of size (in MB): 38154 (white highlighted)

Nothing I do will supplant that 38154 with a new size number. What am I missing?

You need to delete partition first, then the next screen will allow you to create a new partition... Give it the size you want... then just hit Next on the next screen and it will make your next drive whatever is left.

ndemge, I did delete the existing partition. Now I am at the point where it is asking for a new size. It just won't let me change the white highlighted partition size. (it currently is showing the whole drive size but asking me what size I want to make it)

Thanks ndemge! I always loved a good road trip.

For now, I'm letting it reformat the whole drive and load windows. I was hoping to split the drive so in the future I wouldn't have to wipe out the whole hardrive.

For my own computers, I have multiple internal harddrives plus an external USB 2.0 drive, so it's real easy to either back up or move data before I have to blow off the OS. 96 y/o Daddy would not do well with all that apparatus.

I have Partition magic 6.0... It will let you change partitions of an already running computer without loosing any data. Let me know when you get that thing all running and I'll give you an ftp login to grab it.

Changing the Partition size in Win 2K setup?

^ bump

Even though I've loaded the OS, I have not loaded anything else, so I can just do it again. If anyone else has any suggestion as to why it would not let me change the size of the partition in set up, please holler out.

When the first screen appears, To setup Windows press Enter
Then F8 to agree to the EULA
THe next screen letsyou delete or create a partiton.
So if you hit D, then enter then L, you have no existing partition , should say Unpartitioned space
Then you hit C to create the partition and you can then add the size you want.the partition to be after backspacing the current numbers in there.
Hit enter
Hit enter on the RAW partition
Format with NTFS

Re: Changing the Partition size in Win 2K setup? **BINGO**

Bingo! EricKems saved the day. The only way to change the partition size was to backspace out the default (full drive size) value in the highlighted box.

Thanks
