changing the impeller

A 1990 140 evinrude the linkage i see under the carbs has a cotter pin in it am I looking a the right linkage? and how do you undo that part so i can take off the lower unit.

The easiest way to do the job is to take the lower cover off: pull the four clips inside, remove the screws from the starboard side, and the whole cover slides out, off and out of the way.

Then you can see the screw that you need to remove; it is pointing to starboard from the port side where it can be removed.

Having the cowl out of the way makes replacing the drive much, much easier.

I'm pretty sure that model has the bolt on the port side that needs to be removed to let the top of the shift rod loose...
Ezeke or Dhadley will know for sure.
Do you have a manual?

Do i need to put the shifter in gear before i remove the linkage? If so Forward or reverse?

Forward is better.

BTW, Don't turn the shift rod if you can help it.
