Probably a stupid question, but here goes anyway. When you change the fuel water separator spin on filter, do you need to fill the filter with gasoline before screwing it in place? I thought that I read that somewhere and was hoping this was wrong as I think this could be a little dangerous and messy.

Thanks.

No, its not necesary, it will fill fine next time you start it. Be advised that it may take a good long while to fill it though so make sure you have a well charged battery. If an outboard, you will pump you arm off the next time. However, if its any easy access filter, I would fill it if I could.

I have a shutoff gate valve just before the filter which usually fills it filter after I open it up. Then a few pumps by hand to the inline bulb usually pulls the gas through to get things filled pretty well.

If you have a bulb, hold it upright and pump. You'll know when it fills. A tip I got here or somewhere: put a large and heavy enough enough plastic bag over your old filter before you undo it. Saves a mess :D Good luck.

Re: Changing the Fuel Filter/water separator

Thanks for the responses, guys. I changed it once before and filled the filter with gas before installing it. I was just trying to picture why I have to fill it. I thought pumping the primer ball until would fill it fine. I know it would take a lot more pumping but just couldn't see why this wouldn't do the same thing as filling the filter before installing it unless there is a back pressure thing that would prevent it from filling. I guess I will use the plastic bag idea and poor gas into the filter before I install it. Don't they make anything easy to do on these motors and boats. LOL
Again, thanks for the responses.

Start the engine, let it idle a few minutes, shut it down, change the filter, start the engine. It's that simple ... :)

I change the canister empty and pump the bulb just like normal. Never had a problem with air.
Here's a pic showing the elevation, etc. Notice the bulb is between tank and filter. It may work ok with bulb between filter and motor too but I never installed one that way to know for sure.
