You might repost in I/O section. On my 4.3LX (V6 motor), I needed an 8 point 9/16" socket and the max extent of my arm to get the second bolt, if I remember correctly. Of course reinstalling the starter was worse.
Did you take the wires off the starter solenoid post? MerCruiser tends to use those as a junction for the main power to the boat, power to the master solenoid, power to the MerCathode, alternator connection, etc.
