I have never owned an i/o boat before so I have been researching alot about them. I have read a lot of info on the engines and some on outdrives, good and bad models like omc is a big no. But I was curious can you change the outdrive from one type to another, like pull off an omc and install a merc?

Nope, you change everything from the flywheel on back.

The hole has to change some times, not always, just depends on whats it was and what it will be.

Actually T.J.B there is a conversion kit from SEI ( a vendor that sells right here on iboats) that allows you to convert from certain OMC Cobras to their brand new Alpha One Gen 2 drive, just by bolting on the kit. The kit is $350. Their Alpha One Gen 2 replacement drive is $1595. I don't know what particular Cobras it applies to, since the Cobra drive changed at some point. But you might check with SEI and see what they say.
