1998 Volvo 5.7 gs. This will be the first time I have personally changed the oil. I bought a Tempo fluid extractor kit and it has two small hoses that fit in the dipstick tube, plus a garden hose type adaptor. The dipstick tube also has a garden hose type hook up. Does this mean the dipstick tube goes all the way to the bottom of the pan, and I don't need the small hose in the dipstick tube? Would this set up get all of the oil out, or am I better off using the small tube and puch it in till it stops.
Thanks in advance

Re: Changing Oil

One of the hoses goes into the dipstick tube (the one with the hose adapter), and the other sends the used oil into a cantainer for recycling. Just make sure that the dip stick tube goes all the way down into the pan. At least that is how mine works....Also, dont forget to warm the engine oil first so the oil pumps out easier.

Re: Changing Oil

awwww blah... I just went ahead and made a whole mess. Didn't have time nor the money to buy a fancy oil pump, so I use one of those cheap $2 pump from Pepboys. Suck up as much oil as I can, and remove the oil drain plug, and let it drain out the back of the small hole on the boat.8)
Then clean all the oil up with all of your dirty rags. That's what I did...

Splash a half gallon, or rags soaked in Odorless Mineral Spirits, and clean out the mess. Try a big hefty garbage bag too. Sometimes a witch to get out though

I assume the bilge draining post was a joke...

If you have the hose adapter fitting on your dipstick tube, you don't need to run the small hose all the way into your pan. Just run it about 3 or 4" into the dipstick tube as it keeps the top of the tube cleaner by not allowing oil to pool inside the fitting.

Anyways where exactly do you find a reasonble cheap pump at? I've tried Kragen, Pepboys with no luck on one.
The Marines shop sells them for $90.00 bucks.
And they quoted me $500.00 for a complete tune up, oil change, spark plug, dry lube, engine flush. :^
So screw that I did it on my own. Just drain the oil like how you would do it with any other car.d:)
And spark plug and the other mainteance etc. was another 30min. to an hour. I was happy I'm $500.00 richer.

I bought a pump from napa that goes on my cordless drill. it was about 15 bucks. It already has the garden hose size ends. Pumps all the oil out in about 2 minutes...works great!
