Changing oil this week end for the first time (myself)

I downloaded the operators/owners manual for my Volvo 5.0 GL and it's confusing as to which oil to run in this motor. Am I reading the material correctly and should I be running a straight 30 weight oil? I'm a Valvoline fan so will this oil be OK?
Also if a fram oil filter OK or should I stick with a Volvo filter.

I am wondering the same thing, i changed mine and put 5w30 in it and then read the book and it said straight 30w in it. i havent run it yet but if anyone could let us know it would be nice

The 5w-30 is probably not the best for it. If it calls for straight 30 weight then thats what i would stick to.

Many guys run the Rotella straight 30 oil.I used it for a long time in my I/O powered boats with no problems at all.
Its great oil and any truck stop has it in gallon jugs.They also sell the Delvac 30 weight synthetic.

I hope this don't start a huge "best oil" thread..

On the filters Fram would be my last choice.
I did tons of reading about how each companys make filters and one of the best ones that were tested then cut apart to see how well they performed are Valvoline or the Pure One filters.
They even were better than K&N,Bosch,and any other parts store filter.
The Fram filter had cardboard check valves while the Pure Ones have a stainless steel valve.
They found that the Frams cardboard breaks down and can actually get circulated through the oil..

Bummer, I only have this cross reference list for my Volvo filter. I've never seen a Valvoline or Pure One filters. Are these available at any of the chain auto parts stores?

Valvoline is a very good filter and for the price you can't beat them

Sorry,The Pure one is a Purolator filter PL-20049..
Don't know why i was thinking Valvoline...i guess because thats all i use in my vehicles..Valvoline Synthetic oil and Pure One filters...

Advance Auto....they sell the Rotella oil at some location too...
