Have owned and used boats and motors for over fifty years and had to change a water pump impeller only once (I bought a used 7 1/2 HP Evinrude that appeared to have been used in salt water w/o flushing it out). Maybe I have just been lucky but it may be due to the fact that I ALWAYS flush immediately after use in salt water and seldom go more than a few months without use. Now I have have a Nissan 40C, two stroke, and a Nissan 5A, four stroke. Both are 1989 models which I bought two years ago. I suspect that they have the original impellers but seem to be working OK. If possible, I would like to change the impellers myself. I have a sevice manual for the 40C but don't find it well illustrated for impeller replacement. Is anyone aware of where I might find some good illustrations of how to go about it?

Re: Changing Nissan Impellers

Art, which part is giving you a problem? Removing the lower unit or the actual water pump disassembly? I don't have the Clymer manual in front of me, but thought it was preety well illustrated. When I did my 18E, I took pictures, but when I latter did the 40C, I believe I didn't. But will check tonight. I would consider my mechanical abilities, "middle of the road", and I found the replacement on both engine straight forward and relatively easy. I also did not have to fight with any corroaded or frozen bolts, that can make any job a PITA. I also might be able to email you some info.

For the 40 C: Four bolts holding the unit on. One spring pin holding the shiftrods together. The unit comes off. The WP is on top of the LU.

For the NSF5: Two bolts holding the unit on. Remove the rubber/plastic grommet on the motor leg. Loosen the bolt that holds the shift rods together. The unit comes off. The WP is on top of the LU.

Art,

The kits don't come with instructions, but changing them out is really as simple as it sounds...Unless saltwater has frozen the bolts or drive shaft.

Re: Changing Nissan Impellers

I too nned to change an impeller on a Nissan NS2.5A and have the OEM manual.I ordered a kit and all you get for the little 2 1/2 HP motor is the impeller itself. Before I swap the old for the new I am wondering, are there any more rubber parts, i.e. o-rings or seals, that should also be changed?
