Is it possible to change out the transom mounts from an over transom mount to a thru transom mount without any real issues?? I have a 1989 force 125 that came off of a bayliner...it has the over transom mount...but the tilt/trim is bad......and i found another working tilt/trim unit off another style bayliner that is set up with a thru transom mount...........sounds like it should be an easy swap...just drill some holes for the mounting bolts and hook it up to the other motor leg? Correct? (Or am I thinking too easy?)

Re: changing motor mounts?

Yeah! You just remove the 1/2 inch thru bolt pivot and everything swaps. HOWEVER: If you boat in salt water I would not change from the clamp style. They are more resistant to corrosion. If that is the case, I would take the extra time to dismount the complete tilt unit and remount it onto your engine.

Even in fresh water, because of the surface area of the long bolt holes, the through transom bolt style tend to corrode inside the top bolt holes, eventually splitting the clamp. If you insist on using them, be absolutely certain you coat the bolts and the inside of the holes LIBERALLY with silicone RTV to hopefully avoid the galvanic reaction between stainless and aluminum.
