I have a '57 Evinrude 35 hp Lark. Needs a new impellor. I am accustomed to electrical shifts and do not know the procedure for mechanicals. Could someone tell me the steps and mention any potential scfrew-ups to avoid? thanks.

Re: changing impellor on mechanical shifter

Piece of cake. Remove the plate from the side of the midsecton and then remove one screw from the shift rod connector in side. Unbolt and remove the lower unit.

Potential screw-ups?? Yep. When you put it back together, make sure the o-ring is in good condition and in place in the groove at the top end of the drive shaft. Use a NEW one if there is the slightest doubt. Smear some waterproof grease on the splines too. This simple screw-up can cost you the motor if ignored.

Also, when you go to put the screw back in the shift rod connector, use a flashlight to peer in there and make sure the notch in the shift rod is EXACTLY aligned with the screw hole in the connector. If not aligned, the screw will rub on the edge os the notch and that will wipe the threads off the screw. Then it will fall out. But never at dockside---always five miles away from shore.

Re: changing impellor on mechanical shifter

Thanks, Man. Got 'er done. I was glad to have a MAGNETIC screwdriver to hold that shift linkage screw on. Took 20 minutes of fiddling to get the lower unit tubes and all to reallign, so had I dropped that screw inside, I would have popped.

Took an impact screwdriver to get that side plate off.

The shift arm has a grease fitting on either side that looks like a bear to get to -- have to remove the front housing to get to them both and also remove the motor mounts. Is that an important thing to grease or can you skip it?

???? memory fails me on the grease fittings. But I know I'd remember it if all that work was necessary. Can't be a problem greasing it.
