A small motor shop has been working on my 1955 Evinrude 7.5hp Fleetwin. They claim they have to detach the lower unit from the powerhead to change the impeller.

I looked at the exploded view in the manual which is supposed to be for all models 3hp-9.9. It looks like the impeller is located between the bottom 2 sections of the lower unit

Is there something peculiar to the '55 Fleetwin? I can't imagine a design requiring that much disassembly. Why should the top third of the lower unit need to come off at all?

Please help

Yes the powerhead comes off to access the shift rod connection.

However, this is not overly complicated, no matter what they tell you. Will likely need a new base gasket though. I can pull a powerhead in minutes, if all bolts co operate!

Those old motors have a solid drive shaft--no way to unlink it from the powerhead without taking it off.

+1. while you do have to remove the power head, it's not hard. Changing the impeller is a simple DIY job that you can and should do for your self.

The drive shaft is not the issue, the issue is the shift rod connection which would hold you up. The drive shaft is splines and simply slides out of the powerhead.

Correct, it's the shifting rod I was referring to. In more modern outboards the shift rod has a linkage halfway up that can be accessed and disconnected--in the fleetwin it's one piece.

It's not hard if the power head bolts actually come out and aren't seized/broken off, which with a 60 year old motor is hardly a sure thing.
