I'm changing the fuel pump on my 1990 7.4 bravo mercruiser. I got the old one out which is a Carter. I'm replacing it with a sierra I picked up at west marine. My question is, the old one I took out has a spring that fits under the arm that goes into the block. The new one didn't come with one nor does it appear to have the indentations to hold it. Could it not need it? It is the correct part according to mercruiser. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Changing fuel pump

Mercruiser says the part number for a new pump is 862048A 1, they don't use Sierra stuff or give numbers for them.
Now if the Sierra pump you have crosses to that number, then it may work, and is probably just a different design.

Re: Changing fuel pump

Thank you Don, Seirra gave that as a replacement part. However it DOESN'T FIT!!!!! How do these companies stay in buisness selling parts that ALMOST fit? I may not be an expert mechanic but I know enough to know that parts don't work when they ALMOST fit! Amazing. Can you suggest a way to get an EXACT replacment for the Carter pump? Thank you in advance. I new there was a problem when the screws almost lined up. Then I could tell that the fuel line was going to come up short. Rediculous.

Don's number changes over to Sierra #18-7288.

A fuel pump can have an internal or external spring.

Generally I have good luck with Sierra, but being a
Mercruiser dealer,I usually stick with OEM.

Why not order the # Don lists from a dealer ?

DHP

Thank you again. If I were near a Sierra company person I would strangle them.
