I have a 1996 48 hp evinrude. it is a little slow on my boat. My boat is rated for a 90hp. A friend of mine has a 1988 70 hp Johnson that he redid for his boat. Unfortunatly for him someone T-boned his boat while on the way back from his third run with the motor. He offered to give me the 70 in exchange for my 48(he has a smaller boat that is only rated for a 50) My question is this, How involved would it be to switch the motors. Would my current controls work for this motor. How about the wiring harness? Would it need to be cahnged or would the 70 simply plug into my harness?
I thank you in advance for any help!

If you can swap out the wiring harness and controls. That should be the easiest and best approach.

If you can't, it will take some work to reajust the controls. Also, are both engines manual shift or electric?

Alot of different variables play in here. It is possible to use different controls. I use the throttle portion of a Johnson 2 handle controller and a home-made switch array for my Evinrude electric shift. It can be done, but takes some research and work.

Hope this helps.

I think your 1996 has the new style wiring harness. All you have to do is buy an available adapter. Control cable, steering should all be the same.
