Motors are about the same size. Not ever owning a OMC but I think you will have to do some transom work (diffrent size hole in the transom).

what omc do you have? if it is the 400 or 800 it will not work without a major conversion. the transon hole has to be reduced, you will need to add power stearing, hydrolic pump for trim tilt and move the engine. this is not a cheap or easy job.

I THINK IT IS THE 800 BUT IT DOES HAVE POWER STEERING AND TRIM AND TILT ON IT WITH THE RUBBER BOOT IN THE REAR FOR THE TRIM. I THOUGHT I WOULD I WOULD CHANGE THE RUBBER BOOT SO THE MERCRUSR WILL FIT RIGHT. THE OMC DOES HAVE A BIGGER HOLE IN THE BOOT WHERE IT GOES THREW THE TRANSOM. WILL THAT WORK? WOULD IT BE CHEPER TO PUT A NEW OMC OUTDRIVE IN IT OR TRY TO PUT MY MERCRUSER IN IT? MY OMC IS BROKEN..

BODINE56

bodine56,

It can be done, you may have to do some boat stringer work.

Also, the transom cut outs are completely different. You'll need to completely rework the transom.

I've read similar OMC-to-Merc questions before. Generally, the consensus is to rebuild the OMC, as parts are still easy to get, and there is significant structural work to install a Merc.

the 800 does not have hydralic power steering and the tilt is electric, I wish there was an easier way also, I am stuck with an 800 also

Bodine56
First I wish you would turn off your caps lock. all caps is considered rude and yelling. Your OMC 800 is a stringer mounted system and the merc is a transom mounted system. To change you must rebuild the transom then have someone cut out holes to match the merc template. After that still have to buy compelte outdrive. Each of these steps is big bucks. The other option in to fix your OMC 800. About the worst thing that is common is the water pump to drive shaft splines goes bad and must be replaced $800 to $1000. Much cheaper to fix your OMC. What is the problem with it anyway???

The problem with the omc is one of the ears is broke off where it attaches to the boat and tilts on other than that it is ok other than needs the oil changed and new seals put in the outdrive and a new shift cable and waterpump imp.i thought it be easier just to change the outdrive because i allready have a mercruser outdrive...but i guess not.

bodine 56
