hello everyone. this question may sound odd to some but here it goes. basically i have a 1980 85 hp evinrude and 3 85 johnsons. the evinrude has left me stranded more times than it brought me back.) it came on my current boat) the motor starts and runs, though a little rough. the last time out while running wot it just died, the motor raised out of the water and the battery was killed trying to restart it. on other outings it would idle then when put in gear it would die. i know sounds like the typical issues of link and synch. well while changing the thermostats i realized the previous owner had monkeyed them up and stripped the holes and even broke a piece of the casing where the bolt goes in to attach the housing, making the thermo housing a non bolt on part with out modifications. so what i want to do is pull the motor portion off another one and put it on this one. one might ask why not change the whole motor. well i would pull the motor from a known good runner with a bad lower unit and no tilt n trim and put it on this one ending issues. i have searched this on the net and to no avail. maybe i am not wording this right i don't know. i am sorry to be so long winded i just wanted to avoid a bunch of questions and hopefully get answers like "no dummy don't do it its a pain in the ***" or "no problem piece of cake" or even "you will need this special tool to get this??? apart." basically some insight before trying this. Thanks for your time

A powerhead swap is done quite a bit.
Can you post the model numbers of the engines you want to swap, maybe someone can tell you if the two will interchange.

Sure you can do it. I did it just last week. I bought a 1997 Johnson 70hp with a blown powerhead and replaced the blown powerhead with a rebuilt 1995 evinrude 70hp. It's really not that complicated; at least it wasn't for the 3cyl 70hp.

If the engines are from the same year then evinrude and johnson will be identical powerheads. I didn't need any special tools for this job and it took me about 4 hours start to finish.

If you are not familiar with the motor components then you should get a service manual. It will have step by step powerhead removal and installation guides. Also, you should plan to replace the gasket which goes on the base of the powerhead.

If the motors are from different years then you need to ensure that they are compatible.

thanks for the replies. the johnson is a 1979 (857995 i think) and the evinrude is a 1980 e85stlcsa. originally i was going to try a 76 to 80 but the 79 looks identical. i think i will double check compression and get it going. thanks.
