Re: Changing Distributor to Electronic, why not automotive
Dutch,
This topic would fit better in the "Other Brands of I/O and Inboard" area, maybe a Moderator will see this and move it.
Regarding the Auto vs. Marine distributor for those engines, I was thinking that Chrysler had a version of their early 70's electronic ignition* for Marine 318's and 360's. Regarding Marine vs. Auto, perhaps the distributors themselves are the same just differing advance curves with different springs. Also have to use non-vented caps I would think. I am remembering a thread where the person had a 318 powered inboard and the engine had the Chrysler electronic ignition, they were pretty sure it was original to the boat. They were asking about aftermarket coils and such if memory serves. A search thru that area may yield some threads on your subject.
Regarding aftermarket, The 318 and 360 engines were used up thru the years, and there may be name brand distributors with Marine versions for those Chrysler LA engines.
*The early 70's version of Chrysler electronic ignition had magnetic pickup in the distributor with a control unit mounted separately. The pickup from the distributor signaled the control unit and the coil got "signaled" from the control unit. The coils were standard 12v externally resisted, and the ballast resisitor itself was always been the weakest part of that setup.
