Re: Changing Direct Links

When you go to the full reply form and click the "url" button at the bottom of the page the first box allows you to add the url or address of the website. Once you click ok, a second box comes up and that is where you can add the title of name, etc. It defaults to "web page" but this can be changed. An example: web page or title changed: Google To make changes after you have posted, you edit your post, delete the link(s), and insert url again making the appropriate changes.

Re: Changing Direct Links

Please do not post direct links to businesses, coded or otherwise.

Referrals are okay, but not direct from iboats to the business.

Re: Changing Direct Links

Hmmmmm, seems I may have done that in a couple of my other posts in trying to help someone find some trolling motor parts. I apologize and will watch myself more closely in the future. Thanks for the info JB.
I am a little confused though. Please....not trying to be a smart a@@ but I do have a question. In the almost two years (October 2003) I have been a member of this forum, I've done a whole lot more reading than posting (as you can probably tell by my rank as I am still a Cadet). For example, I have read the posts in Boat Restoration back to probably two years or so in an effort to learn new things. I have seen many links to what I would call a business. Links to fiberglass product suppliers, paint manufacturers, boat manufacturers, the rot doctor website, motor manufacturers, and many other places that are undoubtably businesses. Is this no link rule just for competitors of iboats who are in the same business or is it just something that is not known by many on here who post? I'm wanting to make sure that I don't violate any policy as this site is a wonderful place to get your problem solved and to learn new things. Thanks again!! :) :)

Re: Changing Direct Links

It appears to be a mystery rule that is selectively enforce as time permits. I think it is a relatively new rule, maybe not.
But I do know that even the mods have posted direct links in the past.

Re: Changing Direct Links

It's not a rule, roscoe, just a request.

It is only recently that we have discovered that use of direct links to other businesses, particularly other boat related businesses, from iboats penalizes iboats in search engines' listings when a search for boat related sites is initiated.

There are simply too many in the archives to try to edit them, so we try to ask folks when we see them.

Thanks for your cooperation. :)

Guilty as charged Your Honor.

So, typing "try Old Mercs dot com" is o/k, but not "try htt.p://www.oldm.ercs.com/"? (dots added to stop direct link).

Re: Changing Direct Links

Ok, makes sense to me. I personally always check iboats first when looking for boat related items. Mostly because they host this great site and I surely wouldn't want to do anything that would hurt their business. Perhaps you could post something permanently about this subject in the FAQ section and/or the user agreement? That way the word is sure to get out, especially to the newbies.
