Changing a Merc Impeller

This is my first time changing the impeller on my 1960 Merc 300 and I don't have the special tool required to remove the cover plate over the impeller. Does anyone know where I could get one of these tools, or, does anyone know of the 'poor man's' solution to getting to the impeller? Also, I've read some posts about the direction of the threads for this plate and the one in the gear housing. Are they reversed? (Clockwise to loosen? ) Or, did I misread it.

everything i read about mercury stuff they say right handed thread bolts so lefty loosey righty tighty
