Hi guys just ran into a problem yesterday with my Johnson. It appears the impeller has quit working. So I have just ordered the Seloc manual for the motor also.
So is this something a fairly handy backyard mechanic can do? I am pretty new at boat motors. How long should a repair like this take do you think?
Are there any good tips on doing this? I will call my local dealer this morning about a price for an impeller kit.

Thanks guys,
Matt

I too am a backyard mechanic with no outboard experience. With the advice of the xperts here i changed my impellor in less than an hour 1st time out. It is easy and cheap. Don't be nervous.

I don't know if you motor is the same as mine ('57 gale 25hp) so i won't give instructions as i don't want to screw you up. I just want to encourage you.

Make sure the impellor is turned the right way when putting it in. Look at the old one as you take it out.

i also have a 57 johnny 35. one of the easiest i've ever done. off and on in 30 minutes. remove the 1"x2" plate on the side of the leg. loosen the top screw on the connector, remove the 7 bolts that holds the lower on and it should fall out. remove the o ring at the top of the shaft, then remove the 3 screws holding the pump cover, being careful if the impeller comes up with it not to loose the little pin that drive the impeller. now turn the housing upside down, notice which way the vanes are going. remove the old impeller, now the hardest part is getting the new one in, now you are ready to reassemble. slide the impeller over the shaft, then align the housing, side the unit down, now turn shaft so hole for pin lines up with slot in impeller, insert the pin and slide the impeller and housing over it. install the 3 screws, install new rubber gasket. and replace the o ring on the shaft. insert the unit back in to motor, align shaft, and then water tube. start your bolts and hand tighten. now you can use needle nose pliers, to align the shift shaft back into the connector. tighten up the bolts an you should be ready for the water.

Would this be basically the procedure as a 59 evinrude 35hp lark?
