changed my impeller now i'm stuck in forward gear

I decided to be proactive this season and after about 3 years (i bought it then) i've decided to change the impeller on my 1992 20HP Johnson (J20CREN). After lots of fuss, i finally got the lower unit off, picked up my brand new omc water pump kit, changed everything. Upon putting the lower unit back on, i've found that i cannot shift gears, in fact my gear shift is stuck in forward. I spent about 2 hours trying to figure out how to get the adjustment on the shifter, but to no avail. Does anyone know how to adjust this?

Here are some of the reasons i might have had my problem:
1) I messed with the shifter lever pivot pin that is on the lower unit next to the oil plug. I got it back in, but i'm not sure if i messed something up there?
2) it took me a while to separate the shift pin apart so i'm not sure if i somehow changed the length of the shift rod?
3) while trying to get the lower unit off, the lower unit spent a decent amount of time being supported by the shifting rod, so i wonder if that pulled it up a bit out of the gear housing, creating my issue? I don't want to force it so i didn't try to push it down too hard.

any help is appreciated

When you took the shift shaft off did you count the revolutions in or out, as this is the adjustment between foreward, reverse, and neutral.

i assume you mean the part where the you separate the shift rod nut from the shift rod connector? If so, no, i just put 2 1/2 wrenches on them and separated them to finally drop the lower unit off.

is there a way to re-adjust this?

thanks

Re: changed my impeller now i'm stuck in forward gear

just to further clarify, i don't even know if i am stuck in forward gear. When i put the LU back on it seems as though the shift rod is too long now, and as a result requires the shifter to be in the forward position when reassembled. I can physically turn the prop in either direction put i'm not necessarily sure it is forward. If i try to move the shifter, it won't allow it, since there is not any more allowable travel in the shift rod.
