Well I changes the impeller on my 75hp Merc Outboard. I dont know when it was last done, I assume never) motor has little hours on it but is old...early 80s prob

The weep hole was spitting water out, and it seemed strong, maybe have a slight intermintant stream at idle.

Well with the new impeller it is SO much stronger!! The old one did not look that bad either once I took it out, but i feel better knowing it was done!

Not a bad job...never did it before, and it took me under 1 hour. straight forward..

Mike

Good!

Did you replace only the impeller? I see the repair kits out there that have gaskets and O-rings in them...some even have the housing.

Chuck

Yeah it was the whole kit..

Impeller, gaskets, or rings, impeller Key, housing. I figure if I am IN there, I may as well spend the extra few bucks to do it all since its not any more work than just the impeller.

Mike

Re: Changed H20 pump.. WOW

I ordered some parts the other day for my 25 hp and told them to throw in an impeller just in case I need it some day. I was surprised at how large it is....this thing is huge...at least it seems huge for a 25. Anyway, I'm just curious, is it easy enough to replace that it could be replaced out on the water if there was some place to pull the boat up on shore? I carry tools and I'm pretty much a "wrenchhead".
Thanks
JD

I would think if your a wrench head...yes

My concern would be A) getting the boat far enough up on shore, 2, it might be more difficult with the motor trimed all the way up to work at that angle but I would think you could do it.

Basically take all the bolts out that hold up the lower unit, there are a few small screws which hold the impeller housing on, and ther it is the impeller.

Honestly the hardest part was getting that darn impeller back into the housing its like 10x's too big for the housing, but i guess there is no h20 getting by that thing! :)

once done, the only other slightly difficult part was aligning the 'drive shaft' back into the motor. I just had my buddy slightly rotate the flywheel until it basically just droped back in and the 'teeth' lined up again.

No, its not hard, but I would sure RATHER do it at home while it was on the trailer than hacing the boat on shore somewhere.

I say, if you got it.. simply change it and dont wait for it to fail, and cause worse problems.

My $.02

MIKE

replace the entire pump assy about every two years and unless you run it dry odds are you will never ever "need" a pump :) :)
about 1/2 the time when ya NEED a pump ya NEED a piston with it.

Thanks. I've changed a couple 9.8 hp impellers out on the water. They're much smaller, but they're still bears to get into the housing. I can see where this big impeller would really be tough. I'll swap it out next time I pull the boat out of the water.
