Here is one for you TOHATSU GURU;

What is the difference of the crankshaft old and new
model affected MFS 8A/MFS 9.8A: 010322XD

Service bulletin from Tohatsu No.04-008

Description Old P/N New P/N Qty Interchangeability Parts List Ref. No.

Crankshaft
3V1-00030-0 3V1-00030-1 1 A 3-1

The part seems visually the same but where exactly is it modified?

By the way the new 8-9.8 4-stroke Tohatsu is one of the best engines I have ever seen!

Re: Change of crankshaft

I have no idea, although in the back of my mind I keep thinking "coating". The part was changed after the first month of engine production. The service bulletin says it was a machining change so it was probably releated to a vendor change. There have not been any warranty claims ever filed over a crankshaft so I doubt that there was a problem. I'll see if anyone at Tohatsu can remember why, but I doubt anyone in the U.S. knows.

Re: Change of crankshaft

And the response from Tohatsu is...They don't either, Oddly enough the part number has changed back to the original part number now. Their best guess:

Vendor change.

None of the tech guys at Tohatsu were there when this model came out and like I said, all I remember was a "coating" change which could have been anything.
