Thanks Stephens, while I'm always looking with great excitement to read the replys to my posts I must say when I read this one I was stupified

iBoats
Administrator
Member # 9

Stainless and aluminum have no difference in performance it's for looks and durability. If you want better performance change your pitch. better hole shot go down 2 sizes, better top end speed go up 2 sizes. Keep your same diameter.

Almost everyone else who has replied to my neverending quest to get the best performance for the least amount of dollars and guessing has suggested that the RPM range at WOT is the bottom line. The manner in which you intend to use the boat will impact the final decision but everyboat is different as has been pointed out as well. ALL of the prop shops I've spoken to will NOT recommend a prop because there is no way to predict the results.

While I appreciate the response, your recap points out the problem I've had in making a selection. I just want to get enough information to make a reasonably informed decison. Mr. iboats made me second guess all over again and served to confuse more than inform.

Mr. iBoats? Any other moderator?

My point is that an administrator has a particular responsibility to give sound advise, whereas Mr. iBoats here is clearly not.

As for FredsDog's initial request; I think you had better wait for either Dhadley or Walleyehed to come around. At least you'll then be given some advise that can be trusted.

Re: change from al to ss prop

There are so many aspects to props, it's almost impossible to fully understand them. Stainless props WILL improve performance. PERIOD! The blades are thinner which requires less horsepower to slice thru the water. That allows that additional horsepower to translate to speed. In general. Then you get to cupping, rake, etc. They write whole books on the subject. It is also very noteworthy that most larger aluminun props are made to fit either outboards or sterndrives. They're a general fit to accomidate both. You'll find much more specialization in stainless props to fine tune according to what you have and what you want.

What stevens said and willyW. and not to forget that hull and setup changes the way a prop reacts.

Chill, Dudes!

Our prop-expert-moderator who usually looks over this forum is temporarily unavailable and JB hasn't stepped in because he is a non-expert on props, and usually only visits here occasionally.

#9 is trying to help out in his absence with his opinions. (EDIT: WRONG! #9 thought he was exercising new, not live, software. He didn't realize he was on the live forum. He was just joking around. See new thread.)

Advice usually comes from expert helpers, not Admins or moderators. We get many opinions with which we disagree. It is our job, as members, to sort out what we accept from what we don't and go on about our business.

Every possible difference in prop material, size, pitch, blade design and number of blades affects performance in some way. Trying to find the right combination of features for our particular application is what this Forum is about.

If we don't get some advice that we disagree with we are not exploring the possibilities fully.

Thanks for the clarification...it was as if the boat gods reached down and said "you've got it all wrong and I know better!" I was stupified to say the least because I have come to trust the unbiased and generally helpful advise I get here.

I'll chill as requested and sleep much better tonight knowing that all the threads I've read on this subject have not been in vain. Perhaps now the "Temp Mod" knows the full power and impact of his keyboard and mouse.
