I have a few questions, I will call champion trailers tomorrow but just thought id get some ideas from people here, I bought their spindle lube axle with hubs, all galvanized yada yada, but i noticed a difference in the castle nut it has two washers under it one has two tabs on it that protrude from within the castle nut is this a new way of eliminating cotter pins? do i just set my castle nut and then bend the tab on the washer outward ??? I guess its hard to explain unless someone has seen it already before. <br /><br /> My second question is i notice theres a fitting at the end of the axle for you to put a grease gun on for the grease to go to the inner bearing, if i use buddy bearings should i remove that fitting on the end of the axle to allow grease to travel easier from within the spindle?<br /><br />Thanks alot <br /><br />Paul

That first question is a tough one because I can't see what your talking about. Maybe someone else has a good idea. As for as the Spindle Lube system on your trailer-you don't need bearing buddies at all. I guess you could put them on but why?? Just SLOWLY pump grease into the fitting and watch the old grease come out, when you see new grease your done. I usually give mine a shot of grease every 5th or 6th trip to the water. If you put bearing buddies on I'm not sure if you get the grease where you want it to be.<br /><br />Dutch

ok thanks i appreciate your response but i was wondering with the spindle lube system without bearing buddies i would not have positive pressure like i would want to keep water out.

Lugnut36:<br />When you put the rubber plug back in there is a small bit of pressure there. I've had my truck stall while the trailer wheels were submerged and I had to leave it there for over an hour before I could get it going again. I thought about what your saying so I checked when I got home. Not one drop came from behind the rubber plug! That convinced me that the Spindle Lube system is tops. You can do what you want but the system really works. Ask the folks at champion trailers and you'll see what I mean.<br /><br />Dutch

I hope you will report back what champion says. I got my disc breaks form them and they are very good. I use the buddy bearings also. In my case often driving over an hour at 100 degree temps and hubs are very hot when back in to 60 degree water. The buddy bearings are there to stop it from sucking in water when it cools but if there is a better way please share. Thanks.

Re: champion trailer spindle lube

ok i called champion trailers today and they do not recommend using bearing buddies! they said the dust cap with the rubber plug is plenty just like dutch said. But i think im going to improve on the system by removing the grease fitting on the axle and installing bearing buddies anyways, peace of mind knowing i have positive pressure. I know it cant hurt. it would be a bad idea to leave the fitting on the spindle and put a bearing buddy over it then i can see the grease not getting to where its supposed to.

Re: champion trailer spindle lube

Just another update, i figure alot of people might like to know, but i think champion trailer sent me EXCELLENT parts, everything went together with ease they built it to my exact specs all the welds would make any good welder drool over them. Great work i would recommend them to anyone, just remember to get your measurments right because if you do it wrong there is no refunds or returns.

Lugnut 36...see my post above, re: Champion Trailers. Did you consider the Turbo Lube wheel hubs? The're oil filled...and you can buy the axles too. Just wondering? ;)

Re: champion trailer spindle lube

With spindle lube, the grease goes in the zirk at the end of the spindle, back through the inside of the spindle and is forced out between the seal and bearing. If you rotate the wheel while you're pumping, you can be assured that the hub will be totally filled with new fresh grease. This leaves no room for water. You can also see the condition of the 'old' grease as it comes out -- without disassembling the hub. <br /><br />"Buddies' helped me feel secure on my previous trailer, but my current trailer with spindle lube is as good as it gets.

Re: champion trailer spindle lube

Yes i just put new trailer lights on today and that ole gal looks as good as new. When the axle broke i almost went and bought a used trailer for 500 bucks but who knows what i would of gotten. One great thing about doing the work yourself is you know it was done right! And thanks to everyone on this board for their help. Because i had no clue the day the axle broke where i could find parts for it in my area. I shouldve took pictures as i put it together to show the spindle lube in action and put it up on the net but its too late now!.

That's the bottom line Lugnut 36. You're HAPPY with your trailer. I wasn't trying to tell you what to do with your trailer, just what I've found to be a very good system for me. If you go to champions website you can order a free catalog<br />that may help you or someone else you know down the line. You've gotta love it when a plan comes together!!<br /><br />Dutch
