Hi Guys, I am changing the water pump on my mercury 150 salt water series outboard, I am using a seloc manual as a guide, I already dropped the lower unit and one of the first things it says is to slide the slinger up and off the shaft, problem is i dont see anything above the pump housing and there is no detail of the slinger, is it possible that there is no slinger on this motor?
its a 2003, any help would be appreciated

Re: centrifugal slinger

Jarhead, The slinger is a doublethick black rubber washer that sits on top of the pump housing. If it is missing, no problem. The waterpump rebuild kit should have a new one.

Re: centrifugal slinger

Chris thanks for the info, I would imagine that seals the top of the pump and might account for the low pressure I am experiencing, gonna find out today
thanks again

It isn't a seal. It's a slinger. It's designed to keep debris in the cooling water and exhaust from injuring the top seal on the pump. It has nothing to do with function, other than defense.

hope it helps

John, The pump housing doesn't have a top seal.... They just fit a bit snug on the driveshaft, but is it hardly waterproof. The slinger does help keep debris out of the pump, since is it exposed to the exhaust and exhaust water.
