I know cell phone usage is a hot button on the board, but I wanted to share something on my new phone. I am not a cell phone sales person as most of you know, I just need to use one for work.

Before anyone starts in on me, I do use a handsfree kit, and I have set up voice tags to dial the numbers I use frequently including automatically calling and logging me into my voicemail by issuing a voice command to my phone.

I have used a bunch of different cell phone mostly Nokia and Motorola. I have used analog and digital service and have had some really bad coverage and reception. I do have to say that the new phone I just got is by far the best phone I have ever used bar none. It is a Nokia 6385

Most of the phones I have used have had problesm with echoes, static, dead areas where I can't make a call, small phone book memory, buttons that you can't push to adjust the call volume without looking at the phone, the phone heats up the side of your head when used without a hands free kit. This phone has none of any of these problems. Everyone we have issued one of these phones to has come back and said that the phone is awesome. The phone I just switched from was a Motorola Startac 7790. I have always had a 15 mile dead area when driving home from work. Now, I have a 30 second dead area and the people on the other end can't tell I am talking on a cell phone. Here are a list of features that are great and work.

- Awesome sound clarity
- Voice activated dialing
- Use of wait and pause dialing to be able to auto log into voicemail systems etc.
- 500 entry phone book with each name being able to assign multiple phone numbers, like Work, home, cell
- Calender, alarm clock
- Synchronization with Outlook contacts list, ToDo and Calender (infrared-free, or serial cable - $35), Software free to download
- Side mounted volume controls.
- Data and modem capable CDMA service

If any of your are going to upgrade your cell phone, the Nokia 6385 is the way to go. I am sure the other phones in the series are probably as good. Also, this phone was not very expensive.

Re: Cell phone

In the United States you pay a monthly flat fee for local phone calls.... In Europe we don't get a flat fee rate... we pay a monthly service fee and locals calls are charged for on a usage per minute fee. Soooooooo, mobile phones are a lot more popular here that in the States. Everyone has a mobile phone including lots of teen-agers. If you gotta pay by the minute for phone use it's more convenient to have a mobile. Nokia is one of the most popular units here in Europe -- mainly because the software is easy to use.

It's law... gotta stop on the side of the road to talk. Sure is more convinient to use a mobile instead of the old walkie-talkie when 4 wheeling or in the boat.

My only worry is the radiation from the mobile antena is near the old brain. Experts say the antena should be mounted near the mouthpiece so the radiation would not be so near the brain. Why don't they put it there? Customers don't like the looks of a mobile phone with an antena projecting downward. Go figure...

Re: Cell phone

Hands free or not. Should be illegal to talk and drive.

Or better yet, give the offenders a fine the likes of which GOD has never seen!

I would like to get a phone for my teenage daughters just for safety reasons (and my nerves), but the rates are WAY too spendy for my taste. Does any of them offer a teenage-emergency type plan?

Just my opinion.

H.

Re: Cell phone

They need to make a 'Parent of a teenage plan'

The kind that will instantly cut the teen of when the call is not important, or it's getting near a specified limit.

It also needs to be able to send a sub-liminal(sp) message to JUST SAY NO !

LOL

Oh and the phone would have to be strong enough to thrash the child with it when they come home late!

~Just kidding~

H.

Re: Cell phone

There are a few emergency plans. There is also the card plans like the one that Crab Bait mentioned. I have to admit that I like it when people pull over and talk on the phone. A hands free kit can be used well only by someone that can talk and drive att he same time. There are a few people out there that can't do that. I have no choice but to carry one for work. I do pull over when I need to. A hands free kit is a must. I have one for my cordless phone at home also.

I agree I wish there was a better emergency phone for the kids. I can't believe how many have cell phones. How do the parents afford to pay the bills?

I have US Cellular out of Chicago. Have national coverage, but not under the plan for work. I have to admit it is nice when I am on the road. I can call to make sure my son made it home ok. In our small town of 1600, there are 6 or 7 registered sex offenders living in the area. 4 are child offenders and I defintely worry about my son making it home safely.

Re: Cell phone

There are emergency use plans available, but none capable of thwacking a kid up side the head, or kicking him in the .... when he's with your daughter.

Contact the local companies or RadioShack. Tell them what you want. They are not the cheapest per minute plans, but if 30 minutes a month is all you need, it will work.

The cell companies are betting that after a while you will want 500, or 2000, or unlimited use, and will be back to get another service.

Re: Cell phone

Have nothing against cell phones but lets keep them out of the Operating Rooms. Remember my heart Cath when Dr. D...was planning his outing during my procedure..........Maybe we should start a topic on unusual places where cell phones should not be used........Oh by the way after my b.... fest to the establishment I found out later he moved on. Hopefully not in you town.

Re: Cell phone

I had someone's butt call me from the bathroom once.

Sounds weird but it's true. Another person from work had my cell phone number in the first saved slot in his cell phone. On that model phone, if your started scrolling through the phone book, it would automatically call the number it stopped on. He kept his cell phone in his back pocket. Every once in a while, My phone would ring and I would hear him in the background talking to someone in a store or in his house. While he was in the store, I would start yelling so the people around him would hear voices coming our of his butt hoping the embarrassment would get him to use a belt clip.

Anyway, one day, my phone rings. I answer and I hear the sounds of a room with a lot of echoes. All of a sudden, I hear the sound of flushing. Then footsteps and the sink running, then the sounds of a paper towel dispenser. Finally I hang up and call his cell phone. I asked him if he was relieved now that he went to the bathroom and told him I was proud of him washing his hands. He asked me where I was hiding and how come I was spying on him. Then I told him that his phone dialed mine again and that I would appreciate it if he would start wearing a belt clip instead. Needless to say, I bought him a belt clip and gave it to him the next day.

Re: Cell phone

That was a funny one , Scoop. I often have a fear of my cell phone calling someone by accident and not knowing it until after I give private information to my wife. I often check our cell phones before discussing sensitive issues if I know I just called the person in question. But it's worth the risk....I HATE belt clips! :D :D :D

Re: Cell phone

Yeah, a friend of ours in Dallas picked up her phone one day and listened to her mother and a friend shopping in Mobile for about 30 minutes. Her mother had accidently speed dialled her number while fumbling in her purse.
