I have a '96 Cherokee that throws a CEL about 4 times a year. It's always when I descend a steep hill to a stop sign. Normally, I have the auto parts check it and turn it off. The problem always shows up as catalytic converter. After it's turned off, I'm good for another 3-4 months or when I again go down a steep hill.

This last time, I ignored it for a few days and it finally turned itself off. What could be tripping this light when I go down a hill to a stop?

Re: CEL on 96 Cherokee

Without having the fault code I would GUESS an intermittent electrical conection or movement INSIDE of the converter that is causing a temporary restriction affecting the temperature of the converter.

I would guess it is engine braking messing with the exhaust chemistry.

I read on a Jeep forum that 1996 catalytic converter replacements were being done as a recall...you may want to contact some local dealers to see if the will 'fess up.
