Hello all, My question is... Is there any thing that can cause repeat cdi failures?
heres the story... I have a Yamaha 200txrq, in the begining of the year when i started the motor it had a missfire on the #2 cyl. w\no spark. i had obtained a used cdi and installed, the motor ran great on hose and when i put in water and idled around... once i got to open water and dropped the hammer motor ran up to @5300 rpm's no problems then after about 5 mins it dropped to 4500 and no more. Once back at the dock i notice rough runnning again. I had 6 in line spark testers in stalled while running and do not have spark on #5 cyl and 1\2 as bright spark on #3 cyl,
I have followed all the test and per Seloc manual:
*charge coil
low-.813k ohm
high - 79.2 ohm
voltage @ black\white wire disconnected
#2 3.6v coil=170k ohm #1 3.3v coil=3.4m ohm

#4 3.6v coil=4.3k ohm #3 5.2v coil=4.1k ohm

#6 4.0v coil= 4.3k ohm #5 2.5v coil=35m ohm

Pulsar coil all 3 @ 330 ohms

can the # 5 coil cause the failure?
thanks for anyinput..
P.S I have reinstalled the old cdi and i do get spark back to the #3&5 and none on the #2, so i know the failure is with the cdi.....

Re: cdi repeat failure?

I do not know how accurate it is but, here is something I have read on that subject. Hope it helps.
Engine continuously blows power packs:
When an engine starts blowing power packs repeatedly, especially on the same cylinders, replace the ignition coils on those cylinders. The inductive kickback from a bad coil can destroy the packs, even if the coils check good with all known tests. A stator that test good can also be sending spike voltages to the packs causing them to fail repeatedly.

I am having a similar problem on a 115. You can switch coil packs with another cylender and see if the miss moves with the coil pack. I did that and the miss stayed put. Unpluging and pluging the coil pack back in seems to correct mine for a short while. I am questioning the cdi unit as well.

Re: cdi repeat failure?

hey 99yam40, thanks, i did order 3 coils just in case, i was hoping that wasnt the case but i dont want to have to pay for another cdi at the tune of $800 or so, its funny how they say even if it test bad it MAY need a stator..... kinda like saying just replace everything to be on the safe side.. OH WELL hope not in this cas, ill keep you posted.
dehrlich - do you have a repair manual? there are a bunch of test you do to make sure you do have a bad cdi , im sure mine is bad, just want to be safe once i change it, so it dont fail again
thanks guys,
